Awards for All

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £500-£10,000

Overview: Awards for All gives groups a quick and easy way to get small Lottery grants. Projects can encourage a wide range of community, arts, sports, heritage, health, education and environmental projects.

Requirements: Funds are available for activities which bring people together, improve their quality of life, encourage them to take part in local activities and help groups to become well organised.You can only apply for an Awards for All grant if you are a not-for-profit group or if you are a parish or town council, school or health body. You must have a bank account that requires at least two people to sign each cheque or withdrawal, and you must be able to spend the grant within one year.

Young Start

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £10,000-£50,000

Overview: Young Start is a grants programme run by the Big Lottery Fund to distribute money from dormant accounts and aims to create opportunities for children and young people aged between 8 and 24 to help realise their potential. The aim of Young Start is to help children and young people overcome barriers which are preventing them from reaching their full potential.

Requirements: Young Start can support projects that meet one or more of the following outcomes:

  • Confident - Children and young people have more confidence and skills
  • Healthy - Children and young people have better physical, mental and emotional health
  • Connected -Younger and older generations are better connected and have more understanding and respect for each other
  • Enterprising - Young people are better prepared for getting a job or starting a business.

Communities and Families Fund

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £250-£10,000

Overview: The Communities and Families Fund is a grants programme funded jointly by the Scottish Government and the Big Lottery Fund in Scotland. The fund supports local projects that help families and communities give children the best start in life.

Requirements: Organisations can apply for a grant for a 12 month project that will meet at least one of the following outcomes:

  • Improve the quality of life of children (pre-birth to 8) through greater access to early learning, play and child and maternal health support
  • Enable communities to shape and deliver support for families

Examples of the types of local projects that funding is awarded to include:

  • Parenting support and development projects
  • Community play projects
  • Projects that support better nutrition for young children
  • Community-based family support and childcare projects

Community Spaces

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £10,000-£250,000

Overview: Community Spaces Scotland supports communities to become more involved in, and to take responsibility for communal spaces and places. This will bring communities together while making them healthier and happier. Funding is awarded to communities to improve the appearance, accessibility and sustainability of local spaces, places and buildings. Because of the limited funding available through the programme, the funding is specifically targeted to those areas of Scotland that need it the most.

Requirements: Projects must achieve all three of the following outcomes under Community Spaces Scotland:

  • Communities come together to make better use of local spaces and places
  • Communities come together to improve their environment
  • Communities come together to get healthier and be more active

Projects must serve a community in a targeted area. The list of eligible areas can be viewed on the eligibility checker on their website. Funding is available for a wide range of activities involving meeting spaces, recreation, and community green spaces. Examples include providing facilities for community activity through developing and improving:

  • local parks
  • community paths and gardens
  • play parks
  • allotments
  • community centres, and
  • village halls

Growing Community Assets - Closes 30 June 2015

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £10,000-£1,000,000

Overview: As part of Investing in Communities, Growing Community Assets is about communities having more control and influence over their own future through ownership of physical assets. These are usually physical assets, such as land, buildings or equipment, but may also include other types of asset such as energy.

Requirements: There are four outcomes, or long-term changes, that Growing Community Assets wants to achieve. Projects must aim to achieve all four outcomes:

  • Communities work together to own and develop local assets
  • Communities are sustainable and improve their economic, environmental and social future through the ownership and development of local assets
  • Communities develop skills and knowledge through the ownership and development of local assets
  • Communities overcome disadvantage and inequality through the ownership and development of local assets

Supporting 21st Century Life

Area Covered: Scotland

Funding Available: £10,000-£1,000,000

Overview: As part of Investing in Communities, Supporting 21st Century Life aims to fund projects that build stronger families and stronger communities. It aims to improve the quality of family life by helping families most in need to deal with the challenges of family life, intervening early to prevent poverty and disadvantage and give children a better chance in life. Funding is awarded to projects that bring people together, create understanding, help people think about their future and reduce isolation.

Requirements: Funding is available for a wide range of activities and services. For example, projects can focus on:

  • parenting
  • family support
  • respite and short breaks
  • financial skills and advocacy

Projects can encourage mentoring, befriending, peer support, well being and support family members to take control of their life and participate fully in their community. They can also support activities, such as play, learning, volunteering, and outdoor experiences. Through this investment area, targeted support and development funding will also be provided. Consideration must be given to equalities, empowerment and the environment in the design and delivery of projects when applying.

The Andor Charitable Trust

Area Covered: UK

Funding Available: £ eligible costs

Overview: Grant for charitable organisations undertaking education, social welfare, arts or medical projects in the UK. Charitable organisations based in the UK are eligible to apply for costs associated with eligible projects.

Requirements: Grants are offered to fund a wide range of projects, including:

  • Education
  • Helping the disabled
  • Relieving poverty

Balcombe Charity Trust Grant

Area Covered: UK

Funding Available: £ eligible costs

Overview: Grant for charitable organisations in the UK undertaking projects for education, the environment, health and welfare. The application process is ongoing and interested applicants may apply at any time. Applications can cover the costs associated with eligible projects.

Requirements: The scheme is intended to support organisations undertaking projects in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Welfare

Eligible organisations must be a UK registered charity, or a charitable organisation which is exempt from registration.

Barbara Ward Children's Foundation

Area Covered: UK

Funding Available: £ eligible costs

Overview: Grant for charitable organisations undertaking projects for severely disadvantaged children and young people anywhere in the world. Charitable organisations may apply for costs associated with eligible activities and projects.

Requirements: In recent years, the Foundation has provided grants to charitable organisations working on youth projects in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Health and wellbeing
